Thursday afternoon we took a hike. This is the map at the halfway point of the hike. We hiked the Rojo Grande Trail (1.16 mile). Then Sunflower trail (1.16 Mile). And the returned on half of the Juniper trail-cliffside (about 1.4 mile). So our total hike was 3.7 miles.
We talked along the base of cliffs, creeks flowing into the river, and open fields. We have not been hiking for several months so this was a good preparation for tomorrow's more intense hike. The cliffs look like clay but are hard rock. There are vanes of a white rock called satin spar gypsum in the cliff sides.

This is our view as we drive down into the canyon at the Palo Duro state park. It is also a quick tour of the park.
In the morning we will be leaving Ute Lake and heading east to Texas.
For the next two weeks we will be staying at Texas state parks in the north part of the state. One park is known for great hikes and views of a canyon. Another has a small herd of buffalo. It should make an interesting few weeks. The 5th wheel has not moved for 5 months. The adventure continues.... We walked down to the lake this evening and were treated to a great sunset. Here are a few pictures.
Wait first... Why did the tarangela cross the road? I don't know but it seems most of the ones in this area needed to get there. Today we took a drive and it was rare to travel more than a 1/10th of a mile and not see at least one crossing. Along the drive once I reached 40 I stopped counting. Ok now the sunset pictures... At the end of the day I noticed that the sunset tonight was different. The color is from smoke from fires in states in the north west. Despite that the skies were pretty clear giving us a sunset that seemed to slip down below the horizon with a hard edge. The sun dropped quickly after the last photo.
We had one really big job left to do here at the Lake. Moving the carport cover and old 5th wheel by Gramma's house. The goal was to clear the area to be used as a location for our rig when we are here, as well as other people who would visit Gramma. James, who some know as Jr., is here and was important to moving both major parts of this big project. First, moving the two car metal carport. Second, moving the 36 foot 1970's vintage Shasta 5th wheel. Both being moved to James's property across the street from Gramma's. There was an interesting problem for each. The carport had to be lifted high enough to move it and supported to keep it from collapsing. The 5th wheel had been in the same location since the mid 70's and though the tires were still in place, they had not been aired up or had weight on them for over 40 years. It was amazing that the tires still held air. Of course, Shawna took a few before and after pictures. There were no pictures of the 5th wheel moving but you will get the idea. The last photo is of the 5th wheel at its new location. Both were moved down row B in the park to Hwy 540 Loop. Then up to Sage. Down Sage to Morningside. Down Morningside to the James's property opposite the garage and shop.
