We spent the day on Lookout Mountain. Rock city and Point park were great. Later we explored the Chickamauga Battlefield. I will post pictures and some videos as soon as I get a chance. Moving on to Morganton, GA in the morning. We should have given ourselves more time here. We would have enjoyed at least one extra day here.
Next we visited Point Park the site was part of the battle for Chattanooga during the civil war.
We ended the day at the Chickamauga Battlefield. So many died there. The National Military Park was the first in our country and was dedicated in 1890. Some of those who survive the battle voted in congress for its creation. The park is 5,300 acres and is maintained in the condition it was when the battle took place. There are more than 700 monuments to those that died in the battle. It was very emotional thinking about how much blood had soaked the ground there. 58,000 Union troops and 66,000 Confederates troops fought of those over 4,200 died with over 26,000 wounded. Many of those would later die of their wounds. The observation tower and monument was built in 1899. We climbed its 136 steps to the 85 foot top. It gave a view of the whole park.
In the visitor center was the Fulton rifle collection. Over 300 rifles from before the revolution to the 1930's. I did make a quick sweep or it would have been an hour video. For those interested in firearms it is worth seeing.
There was also innocence in the park. We drove past a mother and her fawns were eating. They were completely unconcerned with us.
