We wanted to visit the Jamestown Settlement before moving south toward Florida.
They have a fort reconstruction with reenactors, a indian encampment, the museum was extensive, but the best was the rebuilt ships. They have built replicas of the three ships that were used to bring the colony over from England. The Constant, Godspeed and Discovery. They set sail from London on December 20, 1606. The smallest ship was 38 feet long. Those people must have been praying the entire trip that they would not get hit by a bad storm. I can not imagine what they were thinking as they set out from England to cross the Atlantic with that ship. As you might have guessed touring the ships was my highlight of the settlement. These are REAL sailing ships. They are taken out on sailing trips on a regular basis but the public is not usually allowed.
Heading south tomorrow.
