We decided to take a break today. Each day the steps counter on the phone said we had 13,000 steps just for yesterday alone. So we need a break.
Laundry needed to be done and the hot tub at the park needs to be visited again. Back to DC tomorrow.

We visited the the National Zoo in DC. Very nice and like most of the museums in DC. Free! We were able to see a lot of animals including Pandas and all the normal zoo animals. The Pandas were great! The Gorilla house was really fun. There was a baby Orangutan that was only 4 weeks old with momma and dad. Dad was huge! That was not the only baby ape. There was also a smaller monkey running around in their habitat.
In the evening we took a night tour of DC. All the buildings were lit. We were able to walk up to the fence on the North side of the White house. There was a large group protesting. A group is always protesting at the White House. They were waving the Pan-African flag but it was difficult to tell what they were really upset about. A lot of “No more something something” Very hard to tell with the bullhorn they were using. My guess is there were a couple of hundred people in the group.
We also stopped at several memorials the Lincoln, Korean War, Roosevelt, MLK, Jefferson, and the Iwo Jima. Along the tour we also saw the Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Kennedy Center, and the Pentagon building.
The tour left from the RV park at 6 PM and returned just at 11 PM. It was a really great bus. Very comfortable. We decided that tomorrow we would be relaxing and not go into the city. So clean up in the RV, wash laundry, and maybe a stop off at the parks hot tub. Yes this is a very nice RV park.
Today we visited the Arlington National Cemetery. We were able to see the changing of the guard. So many are buried here.
We also stopped at “Arlington House” which was Robert E. Lee’s house prior to the war. During the war his home and surrounding land was taken by the Union Army. There were several uses of the land before it was made the National Cemetery it is today.
Later we had lunch in the “Castle”. The first building of the Smithsonian. Then on to see several of the monuments and memorials. Jefferson Memorial
Lincoln Memorial
Vietnam Memorial
WW II Memorial
Ending the day tired but it was a good tired. We got up this morning early to go into town. Okay, early for us is leaving the RV before 8 am. We caught the subway and took it into DC. This was my first ride on a subway. Yea, I know. How could someone over 50 never have been on a subway? I just never had an opportunity to ride. But for those who thought that was hard to believe, I have never been on a public bus before today. I know, we are on an adventure. What is next, bungee jumping, sky diving, skin diving with sharks, quilting bee, ... who knows but I doubt it. We got off the subway at Union Station. It was very impressive. We walked out from the main hall to see the Capitol building. The outside is great too. After leaving the station, we walked around Columbus circle to see the statue in the center. From there we had to make a decision and right next door to Union Station is the Postal Museum. It is free like most museums in DC and has some memorable items on display. Stamps that are valued at over 1 Million dollars each and letters from and to founding fathers. One letter was from Benjamin Franklin to John Hancock. Next we decided to take the Circle Line bus around the mall. They are public buses. We hopped on and rode for over an hour. The ride was down in front of the Capital building, down the north side of the Nation Mall, around the Tidal Basin, then back down the south side of the Mall. In the process we passed by almost every museum, memorial, and famous building in DC. Oh and of course it was rainy most of the day.
After that we rode the subway back and later in the afternoon, we took off to get Betty/Grandma. The drive up was not bad. It was a big highway and lots of cars but not bad. The return trip was a little more interesting. Overall on the 25 mile trip we averaged 30 mph. Not really great progress but we made it back to the RV safe and sound (well mostly sound). |
